Same-sex marriage is shaping up to be a good business opportunity for wedding photographers. New York became the largest state to legalize same-sex marriage in June, underscoring the growing tide of tolerance for gays and lesbians in the US. New York is only the sixth state to legalize gay marriage the others are Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont, plus Washington, DCbut the new law energized the movement for marriage equality, and pundits have predicted that other states will legalize gay marriage quickly.
That will give gay and lesbian couples across the country an impetus to throw weddings large and small.
In the past, the gay wedding photography business has been somewhat fraught. And many photographers wondered whether they might alienate straight clients by shooting gay weddings.
But growing s of photographers have actively marketed to gay clients in recent years. They were frequently driven by a sense of social justice, only to discover their fears were mostly overblown.
Washington, DC photographer Charlotte Geary shot her first same-sex wedding for a lesbian couple back inwith some trepidation. At the time she lived in a suburb of Colorado Springs, which is a socially conservative military town. Other photographers had turned the couple down.
But Geary decided to stand up for her beliefs, and treat the job like any other wedding. She posted pictures on her blog afterwards, and to her surprise, she got a flood of positive comments.
According to U. Census data, about 1. A estimate from Congressional Budget Office put the likely-to-get-married atcouples if gay marriage were legalized nationwide. On a state-by-state basis, 11, same-sex couples married in Massachusetts in the five-year period after October, when the state legalized same-sex marriage, according to state department of health statistics.
By comparison, straight couples married in the state during that period. Connecticut reported slightly more than 2, same-sex civil unions in the four-year period after legalization in Octoberand Vermont reported 8, since it legalized them in Cindy Sproul, co-founder of RainbowWeddingNetwork.
Their estimates were part of a study to project the contribution of gay wedding expenditures to the California economy when residents of that state were debating same-sex marriage. The reason, researchers said, is because gay couples tend to pay for their own weddings, without help from their parents. And gay couples tend to have smaller weddings, says Sproul. For photographers like Kim, the pursuit of same-sex wedding clients is not about quick returns.
Brenizer views same-sex weddings as an emerging business opportunity, with a lot of pent up demand. So Brenizer is biding his time. A quick, inexpensive way to get your name in front of same-sex couples is to get a listing on a gay wedding portal such as soyoureengayged.
The portals are meant to reduce the stress of finding gay-friendly vendors. Though the site owners claim that they send a lot of business to their advertisers, the effectiveness of portal is debatable. Kim booked one or two gay wedding clients through an ad on gayweddings.
What finally got him past that was a portrait session he did for the gay brother of a bride who had hired him for her wedding. Show people that you can be comfortable and work with gays.
Of course, photographers can build referrals by forging alliances with other gay friendly vendors. A good way to get those referrals, he suggests, is to find out which ministers, judges and justices of the peace perform commitment ceremonies in your area. In more conservative parts of the country, photographers fear they risk alienating straight clients if they show images of gay couples in their online portfolios.
But hiding same-sex portfolio images and other efforts to attract business from gay couples may offend them. Kathryn Hamm, president of gayweddings.
Some who advertise on gayweddings. One way is to make the language on your Web site more inclusive, Hamm says.
For instance, make sure you mention civil unions and commitment ceremonies, she suggests. In other words, reduce the direct reference to hetero couples.
But if the new law in New York is a of changing attitudes, the day may well be near when nobody notices when a photographer markets openly to gay and lesbian clients, the way photographers already market without regard to race or religion. Love, or at least live-and-let-live, is in the air.
